According to the investigators and Norwegian national intelligent service PST, the suspect, identified as a 42-year-old Norwegian citizen, Zaniar Matapour, originally from Iran, involved in different kind of threats, violence and crimes in the last 20 years, but in the recent years he has been developed his relations with the islamist terror gangs ISIS-Daesh. That way the terrorist was known to security services since 2014 right after raise of Daesh-ISIS as a "suspected radicalised Islamist".

Acting PST chief Roger Berg called the attack as an “extreme Islamist terror act".

The Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere and King Harald V also condemned the terror attack and sent their condolences to the victims and families.

Stoere called the shooting as a cruel attack on innocent people and King Harald V characterised the terror attack as “horrified by the night’s shooting tragedy. We sympathise with all relatives and affected and send warm thoughts to all who are now scared, restless and in grief. We must stand together to defend our values: freedom, diversity and respect for each other. We must continue to stand up for all people to feel safe.”

In the recent years, the peaceful Norway has witnessed several tragic far-right extremist terror. The most tragic attack was Far-right extremist Anders Behring Breivik who killed 77 people and injured over 300 in two devastating “lone wolf” attacks on July 2011.
